Don’t worry, be happy.
Let me give you some background. Us wonderful sales professionals are constantly worried. Worried about quota/targets, meetings, pipeline, closing the deal, you name it! It’s enough to make us want to develop a habit of biting our nails.
And now that social selling is in the picture, the majority of us worry about what to say, how to say it, when to say it, who to say it to, you get the picture. But I’m here to assure you that all worrying does is lead to fear. And this fear will stop you dead in your tracks!
You see amigos/amigas, the fear is all in your head. Do what I suggest here and I promise you that you’ll be unstoppable. Before I begin, let me say this: I’m not promising incredible results – if that’s your expectation then I respectfully question your understanding of our sales profession.

Focus on Authenticity, Not Form
Yep, that’s the philosophy: be authentic. Don’t worry about form. Don’t worry about what you don’t know yet, lead with what you have. Lead with passion and purpose. Let the raw energy of your experience convey itself to potential buyers.
Remember that old adage people buy from people? We’ve all heard it. We all nod our heads and agree. But when it comes to show it, we back down. We revert to the ways and customs we are used to. Complacency takes over!
Let me tell you about a sales rep we trained recently. I’ll respect her privacy so let’s call her Jen. She has access to the awesome LinkedIn Publish tool (where one can publish their own blogs/thoughts and share them with the world!) but was questioning what to say, how to say it, again you get the picture. When I worked with her and really dove deep into the issue, it didn’t take much to find out that the real cause of her inaction was fear.
She feared being judged, ridiculed, people questioning her motivations, and more. Once she realized that her fears were mainly unfounded, she started to write blogs more and more. She shared them with her target audience in a deliberate way. And guess what happened?
Potential buyers started to check out her profile. They contacted her and wanted to connect. They wrote messages that asked her for help and guidance. You see, she learned what you may need a reminder on: buyers are always looking for information. Will you be the one that provides it, or will they have to search elsewhere? Perhaps it’ll be with your competitors.
The Bottom Line
Remember these words my colleagues: be authentic. Nothing else works.
Focusing on form or tactics will keep you at bay when the real fun is exploring out there. Don’t worry about failing. In fact, learn how to fail fast! Even fail often. The more you put yourself through this process, the quicker you’ll come out the other side hitting homeruns.
