LinkedIn

How are you using LinkedIn today?

Are you only connecting with people you know really well? Sure, that’s a good strategy. But do you hand out business cards to people you ONLY know really well, also? Of course not!

So why is it that some people are using LinkedIn like a closed-off rolodex? This is completely counter-intuitive to the real spirit of what the world’s largest professional network is about. The exchange of ideas and collaboration are the real tenets of any social media platform.

And LinkedIn is no different. Think about the awesome ability to have your words and ideas reach places they’ve never gone before. Imagine my friends… just think and imagine.

Watch this quick video to learn more.

Is Your Business Card Empty?

When was the last time you handed out a business card that was incomplete? Probably never. Yet, over half of all LinkedIn profiles are incomplete. They lack photos or have unprofessional ones, the summary section is lacking or empty, the skills section is out-of-box with no customization, etc.

Buyers are going social – we all know this, and as modern-day sales professionals, we are leaving them with an awful first impression.

If your LinkedIn profile doesn’t do Your Name Inc. any justice, then why have it in the first place? My friends, this is your brand. If you don’t invest your time and energy into it, then I promise you, no one else will.

Build a Network of Relationships, Not a Binder of Business Cards

Next time you’re in a sales meeting of any kind, and someone hands you their business card, tell them that you love trees. After the initial awkward stare you’ll get, smirk and let them know you’ll be adding them on LinkedIn.

Do you know that most people in North America are switching jobs every 3-5 years? So a business card is completely useless. They are a waste of trees, ink and time. The only people you should hand out business cards to are the ones that insist on it. Otherwise, connect on LinkedIn, build your network there.

Imagine sharing content and information to a network full of prospects and existing buyers? When they hit “like” or “comment” on anything you post, your message has the ability to be read by people in their networks.

And this, my friends, is how you can build and cultivate relationships.

The Bottom Line

So there you have it, the way you will get traction is by ensuring you have a proper LinkedIn profile. If you need some help around it, here is a free eBook for you.

And remember, don’t treat your LinkedIn profile as some nice-to-have thing. Spend a little bit of time on it and start representing yourselves in a professional manner. Your career is worth it.
