How to Keyword Optimize Your LinkedIn Summary Section

LinkedIn Connections

For several years now we have been teaching our students at Sales for Life to use their LinkedIn profile as a digital business card rather than a resume repository. As part of this training we teach our students the importance of keyword mentions on their profile for being found in search results by their prospects.

Essentially, if your summary section is filled with information about your professional experience and achievements in sales & marketing you are going to be found for the wrong keywords. If, however, your summary section is riddled with content rich keywords specific to your product/service that your buyers will use to find information during their buying journey then they are much more likely to find you and reach out.

This week LinkedIn has further confirmed the value of these keyword best practices we teach by rolling out of their latest premium tool; the summary section Keyword Optimizer!

Premium LinkedIn users are now able to access the Keyword Optimizer by visiting their profile, clicking the edit button, scrolling down to the summary section and again clicking edit. The Keyword Optimizer will automatically pop-up to tell you how many high-value keywords appear in your Summary as well as suggesting additional keywords to add. I would recommend repeating this process several times as LinkedIn will give you different keyword suggestions as you add more of them to your Summary.

If you are not a Premium LinkedIn user, do not fret. Although you may not be able to access the Keyword Optimizer tool just yet, you can still optimize your summary section for better search ranking. Read over your Summary with a fine-toothed comb and try to put yourself in the shoes of your prospects. Is your profile geared towards recruiters or potential buyers? Visit Profiles of your colleagues and competitors to see which keywords they have mentioned in their summaries then add the relevant ones to yours.

I’ll be sure to write more posts on this topic as LinkedIn continues to build out this new Keyword tool. In the meantime, let me know if you have any questions via the comment box or feel free to schedule a call with me by clicking the “Let’s Talk Social Selling” link, below.
